Harold Gilbert
Harold Frederick Gilbert, age 90, of Stratford passed away peacefully at Cedarcroft Place, Stratford on Thursday March 6, 2014. Born in Stratford, Harold attended Hamlet Public School and Stratford Collegiate. He worked in the stores department of the CNR shops 1940-1943 and 1946 -1960. From 1943 – 1946 he served in the Canadian Army in England, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany. He worked for Canada Post from 1960 until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and the church choir, a member of the Stratford Concert Choir and the Stratford Men's Choir. Harold was also a member of the Stratford Lodge # 332 A.F. & A.M., and the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 8, Stratford. Survived by sister Ellen and husband Dave Fangrad, brother-in-law Carman Eckmier, sister-in-law Grace and husband Dieter Uloth, all of Stratford, nephews: Marvin and wife Louise Wilson of Prince George, B.C., Paul and wife Debbie Eckmier of Kitchener, Brian and wife Sharon Sylvester of Stratford, Gilbert Sylvester; nieces: Betty and husband Al Smith of Corbyville, Ont., Elva and husband Gary Gaudreau of Boulter, Ont., Donna and husband Heinz Daues of Boulter, Ont. Predeceased by parents J. Frederick and Ellen (Norris) Gilbert, step-mother Mabel (Gilbert) Parke, wife Elva (Plummer) Gilbert, sisters Reina (Sylvester) Dunseith and Ethel Eckmier, brother John Gilbert.
Friends and relatives may call at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St., Stratford on Saturday March 8th from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3 p.m. Rev. Dr. Hugh Jones will officiate. Reception to follow. Public committal will take place in Avondale Cemetery on Monday March 10th at 10 a.m.
