Notes
- His will divided the 100 acres of land between Joseph Jr and Francis Deshane. After the death of Francis a Quit Deed was signed giving title to their mother Mary Ann Deshane (nee Richardson) who sold the property to Joseph Jr. George Deshane indicated the property has increased to 600 acres. The farm now is in the hands of his children. ( info received from the internet).

My grandfather Alfred DeShane passed down to me an old journal of Joseph DeShane. In the year 1793 he was born, his name was joseph marie Mainville Deschense. When he turned 15 in 1808. He was going to join the 1st regimental Army, but his father said no,because he had arranged a marriage. With the Grenier family to Marie their daughter. in order to obtain land for the French aristrocrats in Canada(Quebec area) Joseph had two siblings. He would go on hunting trips with his close friend William Defoe. They talked about joining the 1st Regimental Army. In 1825 in Ontario,Canada the opportunity arose. Joseph changed his name(Deschense to Duchene and his birthdate to 1803). He and William Defoe both joined the 1st Regimental Army. he left his family behind and met william's sister Olive Defoe. Falling madly in love he married Olive Defoe 1826 in Bellville Ontario,Canada. The name change again in spelling to Ducheine, the clergy spelled the name on the marriage records to DeShane.

JOSEPH DESHANE born about 1800, died 1851 Hastings county Belleville,Ontario,can.. Married Olive Dafoe 1826. Do you have any info on him? I suspect Joseph Marie Mainville Deschenes born 1797 Yamachiche,Quebec and died in 1851 at Hastings county Belleville,Ontario,Can.. Might be the same person. I haven't been able to find the info to prove. First wife marie Grenier married 1814 Quebec and Olive Dafoe would of been his second wife 1826. I will let you know what I find.

A DeShane/Deschenes Puzzle
Joseph DeShane (b c1797 Québec Canada, d 1851 Hastings Co. Ontario Canada) and Olive Dafoe (b c1808 Trois-Rivières, Québec Canada d 1882 Lennox & Addington Co. Ontario Canada). They were married in 1826 in Belleville, Hastings Co. Ontario Canada.
There is a Joseph Marie Deschenes (b 1797) who married Marie Grenier in 1818. Joseph's parents Jean Bernard Milville-Deschene and Suzanne Vertefeuille were married in 1778 in Trois-Rivières, Québec Canada.
Were these two Josephs the same person? He could have married at age 21 in Quebec and then later moved to Ontario, anglicized his name and married again at age 29.
In August 2000 I made a trip to Trois-Rivières to visit the library in the center of the city. There are several volumes there with birth and marriage records. There are very few early records. I found two listings for the marriage of Joseph Marie Deschenes and Marie Grenier. Here they are:
Inventaire des Contrats de Mariage Déposés aux Archives Nationales de Trois-Rivières 1647-1918:
MAINVILLE-DESCHAINE Joseph maj. St-Leon P: MAINVILLE-DESCHAINE Jean M: VERTEFEUILLE Suzaine
GRENIER Marie, min. P: GRENIER Augustin M: JEANVENNE Marquerite
1818-07-23 BAZIN Pierre
Répertoire alphabétique des mariages des Canadiens-Français 1760-1935, Tome XLIII (Ménard / Miville):
milville jos. grenier marie
jn-vertefeuille suz. aug.-venne marg.
(No date was given.)
I found no Dafoes or Defoes in the record books, but many DeFoys. I also found a book in a bookstore (Our French-Canadian Ancestors by Thomas J Laforest, Vol. XXV) that has an article on the descendants of Louis DeFoy. I am convinced that Olive's surname is DeFoy, rather than Defoe.
Thomas J Laforest also has a volume (XXVII) with an article on the descendants of Pierre Miville dit Le Suisse, the ancestor of Joseph Marie Deschenes. I am almost convinced that this is my Joseph DeShane; that he married twice-once in Québec and once in Ontario. Some more hard data would be the clencher.
